Forget ‘sorry’ … it seems that ‘no’ seems to be the hardest word (aka being ghosted sucks)
There are plenty of frustrations that come with running a creative agency – all probably shared by most businesses. Unclear budgets, scope creep, late payment … they all come with the territory.
For me, the one that really grates is being ghosted.
A new business enquiry lands. You have a great initial conversation. You grasp their challenges. There’s a good rapport and you agree next steps – invariably, you’re asked to put together a costed proposal.
You and your colleagues invest time, thought and care into preparing it. It’s considered. Always bespoke, never ‘here’s one we made earlier’.
You know it’s good. You know it’s what they need. You know it’s fairly priced. You know it will really benefit their business.
And then … nothing.
Naturally, you follow up.
Typically, you’re told, ‘I need to discuss it with my colleagues’ OR ‘We really want to work with you, it’s just a case of when’.
Eventually, you take the hint and stop chasing.
Now, here’s the thing (channeling Graham Norton for a moment there) …
Most of us in business understand that priorities shift; budgets change; and people move. Sometimes the chemistry just isn’t there.
Whatever the reason, a simple ‘no thanks’ would be appreciated. Replying shows respect for the time and effort invested.
Our shoulders are broad.
In a world where everyone’s busy, clarity – and knowing where you stand – is a small thing that makes a big difference.
